Skins Poster Analysis

Characters
In these ‘Skins’ posters teenagers are represented as possibly in a poor environment, which probably would include sexual activities, abuse, crime and drugs. The name ‘Skins’ stands for skins for rolling drugs, this already gives the viewers the main theme of the drama.
The way the girl is represented in this poster is without any clothes showing the sexual tension of her, but by her looking like she’s crying possibly represents that she doesn’t want to be the way she is. The undressed people next to her shows what goes around her and maybe the way she is because of her friends or people to do with her and the only coloured this in that room is her green bra, and green is the colour of jealousy. So possibly the reason she is represented like this in this poster is because of he being jealous of someone, could be of someone that isn’t there with her because she most likely would be looking at that person but in this poster she is looking away into space possibly thinking about that certain individual.
The boy is set at the back showing that he is not recognised and he is not evolved in the scene because he don’t want to, maybe because he likes the girl as his eye contact shows us. In the poster everyone’s nearly naked but he is covering showing us that he is shy and he doesn’t really want to be there, but he’s goes out of his comfort zone just to be there for the girl because he loves her.

Settings
The poster is set at someone’s house that is really unappealing and all wrecked, the people at the front perspective seem to fit the setting because they don’t look like they care where they are. So does the girl but it also looks like she really don’t want to be there, she also looks like she’s not interested in what’s going on around her almost like she’s used to this kind of setting. However the boy at the back seems to be really interested but also not what’s going on in the room but in the girl. All this is happening while these to certain people are not interested, maybe this indicates that these two people are possibly a meant to be couple but almost like something is holding them back.
The room is in a bad state showing us that it’s possibly a council flat or an abandoned flat that no one wants, but it probably would suit a non-working teenager that can’t pay the rent possibly influenced by drugs making the person too lazy to care about anything. And the people in this type of environment are influenced too, from friends, boyfriends or just to fit in. It is a poor environment and all the people there are possibly local, the poorness is more likely to influence the teenagers to turn to drugs to come out of this world and than they find themselves addicted because they hate the real world.

Colour
The room is quite dark to make it look scary and navy blue to match the black colour, there is hardly any colours used to in this poster to indicate that there is no liveliness in these peoples life. However there is a lamp shining next to the boy and it’s not that small, showing us that he has a spark in his life possibly love for the girl. The image seems to be a little bit softened making it look a bit like an illusion, this means that the poster is showing exactly how the characters feel but it isn’t real.

Lighting
In the poster there is artificial lighting used as well as low key lighting. The darkness is only based on certain parts of the room possibly showing that those parts are not important because they stay in the shadows, there is artificial lighting with blue lit on the rest of the room and there is yellow and red artificial lighting used on the girl and the boy showing that they are the main focus of the image. The darkness is giving a quite sad atmosphere mainly representing the girls’ depression and it’s also showing that possibly she is not important and she is taken over with darkness and sadness, however there is some light on her therefore she does have some life n her or even some love for the boy she just she just been avoiding, pretending it or she is in a position where she can’t come over the thought of it.

Characters
In this poster the characters look happy sanding all together and also there are pictures of them having fun at the bottom, showing that they got a busy lifestyle also fun sad and sometimes romantic times. In the main image the boys and the girls are standing separately instead of them standing anywhere almost like in order, this shows that the boys possibly have a more clear understanding with boys instead of the girls and the girls are standing together as if they would prefer to talk to their girl friends about their problems or interests than the boys because they have the same understanding. However in the images at the bottom they look like they all are really good friends they look like family, and they spend most of their time together than with anybody else.
The poster indicates their friendship almost like a trust of circle and they wouldn’t let anyone else in their circle unless they prove themselves to join the trust circle. The bright colours used also show that they live a funky, fun and interesting life which also shows by the way they dress. In the main image all of the characters have direct eye contact with whoever would be looking at the poster almost like inviting them to join their group, they give this friendly contact almost like telling the person looking at the poster that they are their friend as well. Them all standing there relaxed and laid back on the wall shows us clearly that they are familiar with this environment and they also look like their a gang, something you would see while you would be walking by and would try to avoid going by there. But they challenge that view by looking friendly possibly showing that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

Settings
The place it is set is quite simple just next to a brick wall, looks like something around their area because they don’t look so uncomfortable to stand there. In the pictures below they are clearly in their everyday environment because it looks like a safe zone and they look used to it and for them it’s their comfort zone. The layout of this poster is funky and creative, something that would be memorable for the people that look at this poster because of the use of bright colours and actual images of them on their days out. The poster has a lot of this going on in it which makes it more interesting, to capture every bit of the poster you would have to sort of study the poster and a lot of people like to look at photos especially when they look fun. This setting will attract a lot of eyes.

Colour
The colours used are very important in this poster because the main image isn’t so attractive so by having the characters dressed in bright colours would already interest the poster more, but it wouldn’t be enough and the stripes and swirls being in different bright colours would automatically make a person look. the bright colours for the poster are mainly taken from the clothing the characters in the main image are wearing, so it looks better than having a lot of different colours that don’t go with anything because it would just look like a mess cause it would attract someone’s eye but after the person looks at the poster and will be put of to actually see what it’s about.

Lighting
In the main image they used natural lighting (sun light) which is the best to capture the right colours and to take the natural look of the characters, this tells us that the characters are no one special or famous their just ordinary people like you and me. This straight away tells us that the drama will be about the characters every day life. In the other images the lighting is different in every one of them because it’s just normal pictures take by a camera or even a phone camera, so the lighting depends on the place they are in and the setting. There is no added lighting anywhere to show any hidden messages, so to find out more about their life and feelings you would have to watch the episodes because this poster is bias it’s only showing the fun side of their life even though there is always going to be down sides because it’s real life.
Conclusion
In these posters teenagers are represented as always up to something most of the time having fun or braking rules, this would compare to some of the teenagers life but not to all of the teenagers. So this is putting a quite bad image of teenagers, it makes most of the people think that every teenager is like that. It is a portrayal view of teenagers because it represents some of the teenagers life but not all teenagers are like this or living like this, so this drama down grades teenagers overall. Some of it is possible and actually happens in real life but it is possibly too much. The first poster represents teenagers negatively but the second poster is a positive representation of teenagers showing that they live a normal life, have fun sometimes in a good way because they don’t include alcohol, cigarettes or drugs in their images to represent teenagers as bad.

Certain type of audience might really dislike the way they represent teenagers because they do not do anything like that or even think about doing it and this would down grade their reputation toward anybody or even their parents, others would be able to refer to it and might find some solutions to help them, and others are basically living their life exactly the same way and maybe by this representation they might stop by challenging the bias thoughts because they would be able to see how bad they look to others and want to change, others would not be affected by this reputation at all because they either don’t do such things and it’s fine as long as they know that but others might not be affected by because they are like that and they don’t want to change. However this might affect some audience like the adults, some adults will not want to see their children see something like this and be convinced that it’s alright to do such thing because of the media, and other parents might not be affected by this because as long as they know and have proof that their teenagers aren’t doing such things they would think that just cause it says that that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is like that.

I think that the first poster has a possibly offensive image because there are so many teenagers that probably have experienced nearly the same or even the same things and might find it quite offensive as it would bring back memories, however others might not find in offensive because it’s not them in the image. I think some girls might be offended because of the nearly naked image of the girl, they might be offended to the fact that why does she have to be in the centre of attention. The other poster isn’t really offensive because it does not have any nude pictures, alcohol or even drugs the images does not include any unnecessary props that would possibly offend someone.
